US Citizens Worry about privacy on the Internet
Concerns about the privacy rights of US citizens increased amid the unfolding of monitoring the government and worries about how advertisers on the Internet use of their data.
A survey released Wednesday (12/11) by the institute Pew Research Center found approximately 80% of US residents surveyed respondents said they "agree" or "strongly agree" that Americans should be concerned about the government's monitoring conducted over the telephone conversations and internet connection.
About 43% said they were "a lot" to hear about the monitoring of data by the government and 44% say they are only "slightly" to hear about it.
The survey also shows a lack of confidence in the security of communications networks and social media. A total of 81% in the survey said they felt "very unsafe" or "not at all safe" use social media sites to share personal information and 68% said they felt unsafe using chat messages or instant messages.
More than half said they were concerned about the security sms and email, and nearly half expressed concerns about the safety of mobile phones. But only 31% said sharing personal information over the phone home less safe.
Lee Rainie, director of the research center Internet Project and one of the study's authors said that "most Americans say the government wants to do more to protect their privacy".
The survey found 91% of respondents believe consumers can not control how personal information is used by companies and 64% said the government should do more to regulate how advertisers use of personal information.
Most of the surveyed say is willing to accept in exchange for the loss of privacy rights with several services: 55% said it will share some personal information to be able to use the internet service for free. The survey came out a year after leaked documents show the extent of the monitoring system carried out by the National Security Agency / NSA can reap the data from Americans and foreigners.
Disclosure of contracts former NSA employee Edward Snowden makes people angry and US relations with its allies tense. Mary Madden, Pew researchers Centermengatakan "one of the most important finding in the study is that many people heard about the government more sensitive monitoring related to privacy rights when answering a number of questions in the survey"
The report is the first in a series of studies regarding the privacy perceptions and behaviors of Americans after the disclosure Snowden June, 2013.
