Last night we saw the covers come from the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE450 4Matic Coupe, the first model 'sport' of Mercedes-AMG, but there will be other members of the family GLE Coupe including high-end performance GLE63 4Matic variants.
Those fans are not looking for performance GLE Coupe will immediately be met by two additional variants, the diesel model GLE350d 4Matic and GLE400 4Matic. The 4Matic GLE350d good for 258 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque, while the 4Matic GLE400 good for 333 hp and 354 lb-ft. For comparison, GLE450 AMG 4Matic is rated at 362 hp and 384 lb-ft. Only GLE400 4Matic and GLE450 4Matic AMG variants are expected at launch GLE Coupe US next year, but we'll see variants GLE63 4Matic eventually and hopefully diesel as well.
4Matic all-wheel drive is standard on all GLE coupe, although the non-AMG version of 4Matic equalization features a 50:50 torque between front and rear axles (AMG version has a 40:60 rear bias settings). The GLE350d 4Matic and GLE400 4Matic also lose the standard air suspension and instead features a steel suspension as standard, although with adjustable dampers. Standard transmission, meanwhile, 9Gtronic new nine-speed Mercedes' automatic.
Another difference between the ordinary and the GLE coupe developed by Mercedes-AMG is the styling. In GLE regular coupe, less aggressive front bumper and diffuser are much smaller in the rear. The wheels are also smaller and metal side steps now gone. Note, this styling is expected to feature in the latest version of the M-Class which will debut next year as GLE-Class.
Inside, the seats are attractive and sport steering wheel, plus infotainment familiar elements of C, E and S-Class models initially catch your eye. The center console houses the COMAND controller with touchpad mounted above the optimum ergonomic position, and trim options including carbon fiber, wood and synthetic leather.
The new owner GLE Coupe also have access to a full suite of electronic driver aids offered by Mercedes. Among the many features active braking systems, blind spot and cross-traffic alert system, steering assist system is semi-autonomous, parking aids and the camera 360 degrees.
The GLE Coupe makes its debut next month at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. It eventually will reach showrooms later in 2015, as 2016 models.
