Car 'poor president' Uruguay negotiable Rp12 billion
Uruguayan President Jose Mujica said he was offered US $ 1 million or about Rp12 billion for selling his old Volkswagen Beetle.
He told the magazine Busqueda if he accepts the offer, the money will be used to help the poor.
Mujica known as the "president of the world's poorest" because life is simple. President Mujica - or commonly called by Pepe - living in a ramshackle farm and pemberikan most of his salary to the poor. In 2010, the announcement of wealth - which also must be provided by all officials in Uruguay - his 1987 Beetle car is only worth $ 1,800.
Provision of home
Busqueda reported that the offer came from the Arab Sheikh in international meetings earlier this year in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
"They made an offer," said Mujica, 79, told the magazine.
"I was quite surprised and at first I did not think much about it. But then came another offer and I started to notice it more seriously."
The president said he was not too fond of the car and would be happy to auction.
He joked that he had not sold his car as required by his three-legged dog named Manuela.
Mujica said if he gets a million dollars for that car, he would donate it to a program that supports the provision of a home for vagrants.
